I was...

I was a nervous, little freshman on my first day of high school.  I remember having only a small group of friends who I only saw sometimes on the weekend.  Over my years here at Millbrook I have grown so much as a person.  I was presented with many opportunities from the range of classes I could take, to the amount of extra curricular activities that I could get involved in.  While I still consider myself shy (until you get to know me), my personality has become exactly what is supposed to be.

As high school comes to end, I would like to thank it for everything that it has taught and given to me.  Yes, high school teaches you who your real friends are, but didn't you really know that all along?  I am definitely grateful for meeting some of my super close friends here, but the biggest thing that I am grateful for is learning what I want to do with my future.  If not for the endless number of science, math, and other core classes I wouldn't know that none of those are what I want to pursue in my life.  If not for the art and sculpture classes that I took, I wouldn't know that I have a really big creative side, and that I am actually some what good at it.  While I do think I found baking on my own, Millbrook made sure it was what I wanted to do.

Even though just a few of my classes interested me, I loved and learned so much from the most amazing teachers there.  My favorite part of any class is when the teacher would get off task and start telling stories or life lessons from when they were in high school.  Those few moments when that happened, I learned more than I ever did in the whole class.  I have met teachers who have given me endless amount of support, and have made me believe that I could and will accomplish my dreams if I work hard enough.

High school also brought me closer to my parents, through the tough times and the not so tough times.  You here stories of high school usually making kids distance from their parents, but for me that was definitely not the case.  As I went through my ups and downs I learned that my parents love me no matter what, and therefore I went to talk to them more and more about everything that was going on.  It turns out my parents went through high school and could relate to a lot of what I was telling them.

While the list of what high school has taught me could go on and on, I would like to give a huge final thanks to Millbrook High School for helping shape me over the last four years.  I can wait to see what the next four years (and beyond) hold for me and everyone that I have met along the way.

  1. This was beautiful! I love how you went through and explained what classes (boring and non boring) have done for you, as well as the impact high school has had on your personal life. I think this was a great summary of what high school is and I really enjoyed reading it!!

  2. I wonder where ITGS fit on your class interest ranking. We certainly had Mr. Dail (Robert Grayson) tell us a lot about life, and for a while there the class would often turn into a debate/argue like a married couple between you and me. That class had a bond that I have never had in a classroom before, and I know it wouldn't have been the same without you.
    While Dail was the instructor for that class, I certainly learned a lot from you. First of all, I learned how to tread lightly and keep an open mind. I came into Junior Year as ignorant and close minded as I've ever been, and also very strongly opinionated. The latter part of the sentence isn't necessarily a bad thing, but the first part was. It took you a while, but I think you finally wore me out with bickering that I saw the world in a completely different way.
    Secondly, I learned that sometimes people who argue the most are also sometimes the most similar. With all the fighting we had at the beginning of last year, it's hard to imagine that we would get along so well at this point.
    Finally, I've learned the true meaning of friendship. To be close with someone, you don't have to constantly be in contact with them. You and I have sometimes gone weeks without talking more than a few sentences, but I know that if I ever needed or wanted to talk, you'd be there for me, and for that I am forever thankful. Good luck in Culinary/Business school, and I absolutely can't wait to sit down and have a meal at your restaurant.

  3. I didn't know you until halfway through high school, but you definitely have grown as a person in many ways. Come to think of it, we all have. Millbrook was a great transition period where we got to know who and how we are and really helped us mature. Anyways, you have been such a big part of my IB life, from ITGS to struggling to pay attention in Spanish, I'm so glad I got to know you and become such great friends. Though it may not seem like it, you've played a huge part in my life and highschool wouldn't have been the same without you. You really helped me open up, loosen up, and become a better person altogether. I can definitely tell where you passion lies (as you always made it clear how you felt about your classes) and I know you will make an exquisite chef one day! Let me know, and I'll be there on opening day! As for college, you'll have a great time, and I'll try to stop by every now and then (Charlotte's only an hour away!)

  4. I really liked this post! I feel like I had a really similar high school experience to you. I always kind of knew what I wanted to do and my classes here definitely helped solidify that. I also got to meet a lot of new friends and became much closer to my parents in the past few years. Btw when you have your own restaurant I'm definitely going to be a regular costumer. (maybe you could even give me a discount??)

  6. I'm kind of upset that I haven't gotten to partake of the blessing of Marisa Florentino cooking in class like the rest of IB seems to have, but even more upset that I didn't have more time with you or more classes with you. You're an amazing person Marisa. You're so sweet and happy and just a good friend. I'm lucky that I'm finally getting to know you better, since our friend groups have overlapped for pretty much all of high school. I loved what you said about teachers getting off-topic because I think we learn life's most valuable lessons in those moments of pure honesty. I've learned a lot in high school and people often tell me I'm smart, but I think the truly smartest people are the ones that learn life's lessons that can't be taught in a classroom. And I'm still working on that.
    Hopefully I can be a celebrity endorsement/guest entertainer in your 5-star restaurant once I'm on Broadway in the future. Compliments to the chef (;

  7. Marisa, I am so lucky to know you. You are such a kind person with a huge heart, and I can not wait to see what the future has in store for you. Every time I talk to you, I leave with a smile, knowing that you don't just talk out of courtesy or because you have to, you are genuinely interested in what I have to say. That is so incredibly rare in someone our age. Having experienced your culinary skills first-hand, I have no worries about your abilities for the future... All I know is that I can't wait to be able to say "I knew her when..." as you prep some dish on the food network (a guilty pleasure of mine). In your post, you talk so much about the impact that other people have had on you, but I hope you know the impact that you have had on others, especially me.

  8. Hello Marisssssssaaa! I am so glad that we've gotten so close this year. I am so grateful for the love and support you have shown me over the past year. I have love squad time with you and our almost daily vent sessions about some problem or another. I consider you to be one of my closest friends. As I say often, I wish we had met earlier. You are such a nice and funny person who can definitely have an attitude when needed lol. I admire the passion you have for baking and how excited you are for your future career! I can't wait to visit your restaurant in Paris one day! Oh and PS I'm sorry that I'm such a slow person and that you have to wait for me in Bio every day. Thanks for being my friend despite this annoying flaw.

  9. 1) You have never cooked for me/our class. The closest we got was when Zack spilled/stepped on the cupcakes you made for another class. This is really wrong.
    2) Thank you for being a part of my class- even though you didn't really say a lot, I always felt like you were taking something away from it.
    3) Best of luck next year!
